Been a long time

I apologize about not blogging for so long. But as I mentioned, I got a new puppy. I have done this before - get a new puppy, but I think it is like giving birth, once it is over, you forget all the pain....until the next time.

I asked my DH to buy her a stuffy to cuddle - this is what he got.
It is twice her size! She still mauls it and falls asleep on it regularly.

Actually, I think having a real baby might have been easier, I mean I would still have to get up at 2am, but wouldn't have to cart a newborn into the rain soaked backyard in my jammies to do its business. And eventually with a child, they grow up and you can make them do stuff, like take out the garbage or grab you a pop. Can't get a dog to do those things. However, a dog doesn't talk back as often and you can leave them at home easier.

So Peanut is sleeping through the night...if I sleep with her...in the guest bed. Not a good solution.
Last night we put her in a large Rubbermaid tote (no lid - I'm not cruel) next to J's bed. She slept until 4am and then when J put his hand in to pet her back to sleep, she decided she would rather play with him. So again I ended up in the guest bed with her. We will get through this eventually. She has a crate that she sleeps in during the day no problem. But I think Kodi keeps her awake at night so she doesn't like to sleep there then. Once she is house trained I will let her sleep with J in his bed.

I have managed (while she naps) to get a bit of sewing done. The 2nd baby quilt top is finished. Now I have to sandwich it and start the actual quilting of it. I have a week and a half until the baby shower.


I was at a family BBQ this weekend and my sister H mentioned that she and some of her co-workers at Telus read my blog occasionally.

So hey you guys why aren't you commenting?

Start commenting or I will tell your boss that you are surfing the net during work hours - cause you know I have never done that :D

In other news, one of my son's fish had babies AGAIN! We caught 24! this time. Did I mention the male fish died about a month ago? Did I also mention that the female saves the sperm to fertilize herself? Ya...both females still look pregnant so I wouldn't be surprised if we find more someday soon. I have no idea what we are going to do with them all. We now have approx. 40 fry, 14 that are about 3 weeks old, and 24 that are a few days old.

More baby fish (fry)

Baby fish are called fry.

If you remember from the last time, we saved 5 fry - we think the bigger fish ate the rest, as the mother can often give live birth to 20-40 fry at a time.

Some of the 5 fry we rescued died, we had 3 left when we went camping a couple weeks ago. My husband texted me while away, to say 2 of the 3 fry died, but he had found a new little fry in the tank.

The one last fry left from the first batch, was now large enough to go into the main tank and not be eaten.

So now we had 2 adult female mollies, 1 large female fry and one little fry. You still following?

Well Sunday morning as I was rushing around trying to get breakfast cooked and get ready to go to the baby shower, my son yells that there are more baby fry.

We found 13 this time!

Now the only good thing is that the male mollie died a week or so ago and so cannot impregnate the fish anymore - the bad news is that the female mollies save the sperm to fertilize themselves when they feel like it.

So 2 large fish and 1 med one in main tank.

The one under the birthing tank (where we put the most pregnant looking female fish), is the fry from the first batch we rescued about a couple months ago.

And 13 little fry and the one a week older are in the fry tank.

My son's molly (fish) had babies yesterday morning. Mollies give birth to live fish not eggs. We got this fish and two others about 3 wks ago. We noticed soon after that this one fish looked kind of fat, so we googled mollies and discovered that she may be pregnant. Just the night before, I was looking at her and said that I actually didn't think she was pregnant because she didn't seem to be getting any bigger.

My son noticed them soon after I woke him yesterday morning and called for me. I grabbed a tupperware like container and scooped the little fry (that is what baby fish are called) up with a net and popped them into it. We are not sure how many babies she had, but we saved 5. We seen at least 2 being eaten, one by the mother. That is a piece of gravel from the tank for a size comparison. The container they are in is about 3 inches across.
She may have had more once we left to go to work and school, but my son could not see anymore when he got home from school, so if she did, they were eaten. Sadly, the little black one did not survive the day. They are tiny; only about 2 millimeters long.

We bough a special breeder tank last night that floats in the big tank and can hold a pregnant fish and has a little trap that the fry fall into so that they cannot be eaten. The adult fish are still trying to get them through the breeder tank.

They have to be kept separate from the adult fish until they have at least doubled in size. Not sure how long that will take.

We have two females and a male adult mollies. I read online today that mollies can give birth to fry every 30 days. I really wish the lady at the pet store had told me that!
