Life & Stuff

Day 26 eating a low carb lifestyle. Down 10 lbs. Bouncing up and down 1-2 lbs. Not gaining so that is good.

Saw something on TV about Joan Rivers criticing red carpet styles...has anyone looked at her lately?!
Would you really take style advice from her after what she has done to her face!? She used to look so normal too. Now she looks like the Joker!

Why do people mess with how God made them? Check out these bad plastic surgery jobs.

It has been raining so much lately, I am late getting my seeds started. I am starting them indoors, but need to get the dirt into egg cartons for planting, on the back patio table, so need the raint to stop! I think Mother nature is PMSing - she just cannot make up her mind on the temperature this spring.

I read Minding Frankie by Mauve Binchey this weekend. I liked the book, I like most of Mauve's work. They are always a very easy read, not too wordy. However, a few things about this book irked me.

I am assuming it is set in our time, as there is nothing to indicate otherwise. One of the main characters is a former art teacher that has been forced into retirement in her mid-forties. The book explains how she decides to learn the Internet once she retires. Hey! I'm in my mid-forties (or soon will be) and I have know about the Internet for YEARS, have been on and using the Internet for years!  Pretty much every teacher in the schools here have their own computer in their class as well as several others for the students to use. This is just unbelievable for a former school teacher from the U.S. to have not been web-sauvy.
Ok go that off my chest - whew.

Another thing that kind of bothers me is that she portrays Irish people as being somewhat simple-minded. Not that they are stupid or anything, but very conscience of what others think of them - that what others think somehow makes them better or worse. And also that they dwell on the unimportant, such as what others think of how they dress or how their flower box looks etc... very self-absorbed. I've never been to Ireland, but I seriously hope, the people are not like this.

That is all...rant over :)

Weekly Update

So since the beginning of the year I have kinda sorta been on and off a diet.

For the past 9 days (today is day 10), I have been successfully eating low carb, with no cheats. I have had no sugar, no bread, no starchy veggies (potatoes), no rice, no pasta. I am eating a lot more veggies. I feel good. I am down 7.4 lbs. Down a total of 17.4 lbs from my highest weight back in December.

On Tuesday J called me from school saying he had a bad headache and felt funny. I told him to tell his teacher so he could call home (he had snuck into the bathroom to call me on his cell, which is forbidden). His teacher thought he was faking it and told him to wait until after his next class, which was the end of the day and he came home, still with a headache and feeling funny. He took Advils for the rest of the evening.

The next morning, he still had a headache so he didn't go to school - he took Tylenols since the Advils didn't seem to be helping much.

Thursday morning we took him to the walkin clinic since he still had the headache. After questioning him to see if he had fallen or anything he remembered being hit in the forehead with a basketball on Tuesday at close range. He didn't think anything of it at the time because it was an accident and he wasn't hurt, or so he thought.

The Dr says he has a minor concussion. The headache can last 3-5 days and to continue taking Advil. So he was home again on Friday, his 14th birthday, still having the headache. Today, Saturday the headache is pretty much gone. I called the school on Thursday to let them know what was going on and asked the VP to speak to J's teacher about letting him call when he needs to. His rule is that they can only call home twice each year. As J doesn't usually complain of headaches, I think this guy should have listened to him. J had a minor concussion and is fine now, but it could have been much worse.

Still not much happening on the job front - I have submitted for a few jobs but no word back from anyone yet.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend - today is a gorgous sunny day, but the rain is coming tomorrow.

I'm an auntie again!

My nephew Chris and his girlfriend Candice welcomed a beautiful baby girl last night, April 4th at 11:45pm.
Cali Alexis weighed in at 8lbs 8oz.

After a full day of labour and not progressing as expected, Candice was given a C-section.
Both Mother & baby are doing well :)

Pictures coming once I get to see her :)

End of week update

I know I have been scarce around here lately - sorry about that. I guess I just didn't have much to write about.

I had a follow-up Dr's appt on Tuesday. My weight is down 10lbs and my blood pressure is also down (132/72). Dr said if I lose 20 more pounds, I can get off the blood pressure meds. Yah!

I may have a work-from-home job in the works. The pay isn't what I am used to, but is better than nothing. I am halfway though the selection process. I have to do an online course next week and then we shall see. It is answering inbound calls from home, not my ideal job, but beggars can't be choosers can they?

It is supposed to be a lovely weekend this weekend - sunny & warm(er) :) I need to get some of my veggie seeds started indoors this weekend.

Before Christmas I bought 2 Wagjag.com vouchers for Surf & Turf dinners at a local dockside restaurant for a couple of friends of ours and ourselves. Last weekend we finally went out for that dinner. The deal was Surf & Turf (8oz sirloin & lobster tail), choice of potato, vegggie and soup or salad to start, for 2 people for $40. So I bought two, pretty good right?

Well it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. They had the world's smallest lobster tails, more like large shrimp and they were extremely overcooked. The steaks were all a little overdone for each of our liking too.

Since we paid for the meal, our friends paid for the drinks and desserts, which probably came to about the same price I paid.

We had a nice evening out with good friends, so I guess that is all that really counts.

Also, my nephew and his girlfriend's baby has decided she doesn't want to meet us and is 2 weeks past due. Her mommy will be induced on April 6th (her Mommy's birthday incidentally) if she doesn't decide to make an appearance before that. I guess that will make it easy on the daddy to rememner their birthdays right ? :)

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Grungy Gretchen Flip-Thru

This is a flip-through of a recently completed journal of mine. I call it GG (grungy Gretchen), it is so far from my usual style but I enjoy...
